The History of Aquascutum
1851 The year of the Great Exhibition at Hyde Park, Aquascutum is founded by John Emary (opposite), who opens a gentlemen's tailors shop at 46-48 Regent Street. He is granted a patent for shower proofing wool fabric, hence the Aquascutum name, which comes from the Latin words 'Aqua' for water and 'scutum' for shield.
1854 Aquascutum coats are issued to British army officers during the Crimea war to provide protection against rigours of the Russian weather.
1890 Aquascutum moves premises to 100 Regent Street, the current location of their flagship store.
1897 Aquascutum is granted their first Royal Warrant by King Edward VII.
1903 A second Royal Warrant is granted to Aquascutum by the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII, seen here wearing an Aquascutum Cape Coat in the Prince of Wales Check).
1909 The first Aquascutum factory opened in Northamptonshire, where they still produce the Aquascutum trench coats today.
1911 King George V grants Aquascutum their third Royal Warrant.
1914 Aquascutum supplies waterproof trench coats to soldiers during the Great War.
1918 Due to consumer demand, Aquascutum launches the retail version of their popular trench coat.
1920s Aquascutum grows in popularity and receives another Royal Warrant from the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII and then Duke of Windsor).
1940s Aquascutum provides uniforms to the British military throughout World War II.
1940 A German bomb explodes in Regent Street in 1940 (opposite).
1948 Aquascutum opens their first New York premise, whose showrooms are located in the Empire State Building.
1949 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II grants Aquascutum their forth Royal Warrant.
1951 Aquascutum celebrates its centenary.
1952 Aquascutum is granted their fifth Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
1953 Mount Everest is conquered by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay wearing D711, a fabric created by Aquascutum.
